PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a signal level difference appearing in the horizontal direction or in the vertical direction along respective pixels. SOLUTION: Suppose that the signal level difference appears between a right region and a left region bordering on the boundary extending in the vertical direction. An 8×8 region having 8 pixels respectively in the longitudinal and lateral directions in contact with the boundary is set for extracting a part of pixels (S1), an average value of signal levels of the left and right regions is evaluated, and the value which negates the signal level difference is evaluated from the average value (S2, S3). Letting this value as a correction quantity, it acts respectively on the signal levels of respective pixels so as to negate the signal level difference (S4). Since the signal level difference of the pixel appearing in the horizontal direction along respective pixels is one kind of the signal level difference generated from distribution of the signal level of the pixel, the signal level difference of the pixel appearing in the horizontal direction H along respective pixels can be reduced by correcting the respective pixels by letting the correction quantity act on the signal level of respective pixels as a statistical quantity concerning the distribution of the signal level of the pixel.
