The invention relates to the field of medical diagnostics. More specifically, the invention relates to methods to diagnose or screen for Diabetes Mellitus type 1 (DM1) in a subject, preferably a human subject, by assaying for a marker for DM1. Provided is a method to diagnose or screen for DM1 in a subject, preferably a human subject, said method comprising determining the level of at least one, preferably at least two, more preferably at least three, most preferred at least four, DM1-specific gene product(s) in a biological sample isolated from said subject, preferably peripheral blood monocytes, wherein said DM1-specific gene is selected from the group comprising STX1A, MCP-3, CCL2, HSPA1A, HSPA1B, EMP1, BAZ1A, CD9, PTPN7, CDC42, FABP5, NAB2 and SDR1.
