The airbag (10) comprises an upper side (12) and an underside (14) which are connected together along a peripheral fastening (20). Two trapping bands (22,24) are arranged inside the airbag, and have a mid-part (22a,24a) and end sections (22c,24c). A recess (30) is formed in the region of the peripheral fastening which is so deep that in the radial direction (r), areas of the upper side stand further out than the peripheral fastening.
