Display control system for use with multi-layer displays

A controller and method for use in a multi-layer display (MLD) is disclosed. The MLD has at least two overlapping display layers. The controller detects when elements on different elements will overlap, and has means for adjusting either the position or visual properties, such as colour or brightness, of one of the elements in order to improve their viewability to a user. This overlapping situation arises, for example, in a GUI when windows displaying text or graphics are positioned over each other.
