<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a settlement server which enables payment with ease by using a portable information terminal, etc. <P>SOLUTION: A portable information terminal 1 is connected to a certificate server 22 via an internet 4, asks for a response of bar code information, and then receives the bar code information. The portable information terminal 1 displays a bar code pattern on a display. A POS register 32 reads the bar code pattern via a bar code reader 31 and supply acquired bar code information to a payment controller 33. The settlement controller 33 is connected to a payment server 24 via a private line 5 to get payment information. The POS register 32 calculates amount billed according to the settlement information acquired via the settlement controller 33.
