<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid polymer fuel cell enhancing power generation performance especially in low humidification operation in high potential operation. <P>SOLUTION: An anode side separator 1a, an anode diffusion layer 2a, an anode catalyst layer 3a, a polymer electrolyte membrane 4, a cathode catalyst layer 3b, a cathode diffusion layer 2b and a cathode side separator 1b are laminated in order to form one unit, and a plurality of units are stacked to constitute the solid polymer fuel cell. The cathode catalyst layer 3b comprises a catalyst formed by carrying platinum or a platinum alloy in a carbon carrier having an average lattice spacing of (002) planes d002 of 0.338-0.355 nm and a carrier specific surface area of 80-250 m<SP>2</SP>/g, an electrolyte comprising ion exchange resin, and vapor phase growth carbon fibers, and a water retention layer 5b comprising ion exchange resin, carbon particles, and the vapor phase growth carbon fibers is installed on the surface coming in contact with the catalyst layer of the cathode diffusion layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
