PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source unit for an endoscope capable of controlling the irradiation of illumination light so as to improve the resolution of still images without lowering a moving image rate. SOLUTION: Second light L2 is not emitted to an object in an even-numbered field period T3 in a charge read period TR by trigger signals S1 and a CCD is not exposed during the time. Also, a charge read method is changed from the field read of reading entire image signals for each field period to the frame read of reading the entire image signals in one frame period T1 by the trigger signals S1. As a result, in the odd-numbered field period T2 and even-numbered field period T3 of the charge read period TR, charges generated by odd-numbered and even-numbered lines are respectively read and the still images of a high resolution are formed. Also, since the frame read is used only for the formation of the still images in the charge read period TR, flickering due to the decline of the moving image rate is not generated.
