PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ball selecting method of a ball spline mechanism capable of improving the accuracy in estimating the optimum size (outer diameter) of a ball. SOLUTION: The rattling quantity is measured on every phase where a shaft pulley ball groove Ho and a sheave pulley ball groove Hi of the ball spline mechanism V are opposite to each other (step S21), the largest rattling quantity in every phase is determined as the optimum rattling quantity, the phase having the optimum rattling quantity is determined as the optimum phase (step S22), and the optimum outer diameter d of the ball of the optimum phase is estimated on the basis of the optimum rattling quantity (step S23). Thus the optimum phase determined on the basis of the relationship between the spline groove H and the ball for measurement 9 is found in relatively rotating and moving a shaft pulley 2 and a sheave pulley 6, and the rattling at that time is determined as the optimum rattling quantity to improve the accuracy in estimating the outer diameter d of the optimum ball.
