SOLUTION: In this structural member, which receives a bending load in at least one area in the longitudinal direction, the area is provided with a plane facing the bending load and side faces forming angled parts on both sides of the plane, the end face of the longitudinal end part is provided with an outline curving projectingly against the load application direction of the bending load, and a member surface between the area and the end face of the longitudinal end part is formed of a curved face continuing over the plane and the side faces of the area. In this designing method for this structural member, length Lo (mm) and thickness To (mm) of a material piece for the structural member are found, length Lx (mm) and thickness Tx (mm) (x = 1 to n) of the area are found based on a basic condition of a distance Zx (mm) from one end face (a reference end face) to the load applied point of the structural member (x is a number for the load applied point numbered sequentially from the point closest to the reference end face), and a distance L'x (mm) (x = 1 to n) from the reference end face to the end part on the reference end face side of the area is found.
