A simplified universally fitting drive system for a lift has a modular construction with a motor module (11) comprising the motor and attached winch and a separate module (16, 19) for the pulley system supporting the counterweight. The two modules are separately mounted on the lift shaft and lift room floor and are linked by the cable runs. The separately mounted modules replace the existing bulky power unit (9) with fixed spacing between the support cables for the cabin and counterweight.
