The method involves recording a minimum of two fingerprint images (2a,2b,2c) that depict partially different areas of one finger of a person. The recording of the partial fingerprints is carried out using a small sensor. The data from the images are stored in two sets of reference fingerprint data. The fingerprint data is used to check the identity of the person. An independent claim is also included for a device of recording reference fingerprint data for a person.
