摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compound having a negative permittivity anisotropy whose absolute value is large and to provide a liquid crystal display element which contains this compound and has a negative permittivity anisotropy such as a vertical aligned type, IPS and the like. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element has a structure in which a liquid crystal is located between a pair of substrate and has at least an orientation-controlled layer, a transparent electrode, and a polarizing plate. The liquid crystal contains at least one compound having a partial structure of formula (A). The permittivity anisotropy of the liquid crystal display element is negative. In the formula, W<SP>1</SP>and W<SP>2</SP>are each a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, -CF<SB>3</SB>, -CF<SB>2</SB>H, -OCF<SB>3</SB>or -OCF<SB>2</SB>H. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
