The present invention relates to a clamping apparatus for use with a rock drilling rig. The clamping apparatus comprises first and second jaw means fo r jaw gripping a drill string component, the first and second jaw means comprising first and second gripping means, respectively, for gripping respective corresponding engagement means of a respective end portion of the drill string component. The clamping apparatus further comprises jaw actuati ng means. The engagement means are arranged so as to allow clamping independent ly of the rotational position of the drill string component as seen with respec t to its axis of symmetry. The invention also relates to a drill string component and a rock drilling rig.
