PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facsimile machine capable of attaching/detaching even a communication unit indispensable to performing facsimile communication. SOLUTION: The communication unit is attachable and detachable, and for example, a telephone line communication unit 15 for performing communication through a telephone line or a data exchange network communication unit 16 for performing communication through a data exchange network can be mounted. If the communication unit is mounted, a communication unit detector 17 detects the attached unit, and determines the type of the attached communication unit and transmits it to a main control unit 11. Also, telephone directory data and device setting data are read from the attached communication unit and set. The main control unit 11 switches the control of the communication unit and a corresponding communication procedures, and performs a call or facsimile communication using the attached communication unit.
