PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the roughened rate of an aluminum foil for an electrolytic capacitor. SOLUTION: This surface treatment method comprises chemically etching the aluminum foil in the presence of one or more elements from among In, Sn, Sb and Pb. The etched aluminum foil acquires the finely roughened surface having many micropores 1 with an approximately pyramidal shape formed thereon. The finely roughened surface is preferably constituted substantially of the micropores 1 and partition walls 2 each of which surrounds the entire perimeter of the micropore 1. When the etched aluminum foil is then electrolytically etched, it acquires the high density of pits formed thereon, each of which initiates from the bottom of the micropore, and provides an electrode for the electrolytic capacitor having superior capacitance per unit area. The etched aluminum foil can also be applied to a substrate to be painted, because of having high hydrophilicity due to the finely roughened surface. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
