PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify polygon shape in electronic map data. SOLUTION: Polygons contained in map data are read into a computer, and a polygon POL0 is disassembled into structural segments constituting the external shape of the polygon, and selected structural segments L1-L4 etc. are extended. When the extended segments intersect with other structural lines, a simplified polygon POL1 is obtained by defining the new external shape of the polygon with the extended segments. This transformation is performed only when the following conditions are satisfied: the segments shared with another polygon are not to be the object of the transformation; the area change of the polygon does not exceed a prescribed value; and the connotation relationship between the polygon and a ground object does not change.
