PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for easily, quickly and automatically isolating/refining a nucleic acid in high isolation performance and in high reliability from a specimen containing the same without scattering of a liquid reserved in a nucleic acid isolating/refining cartridge and without pollution of surroundings and contamination to other samples. SOLUTION: The system automatically isolates/refines a nucleic acid and comprises the nucleic acid isolating/refining cartridge 11 with a nucleic acid-adsorbing porous body 11b contained in a vessel having at least two openings and a pressure generator 43 for feeding air into the cartridge 11. The system functions to isolate and refine a nucleic acid from a specimen containing the same injected into the cartridge 11. In this system, the pressure generator 43 works as follows: In discharging a liquid 16 injected into the cartridge 11 via the porous body 11b out of the cartridge 11, such a volume of air as to correspond to the volume of the liquid 16 injected into the cartridge 11 is fed out.
