A friction member for frictional engaging device that not only can attain weight reduction, excelling in impact resistance but also can attain improvement to sliding resistance; and a process for producing the same. There is provided friction member (10) for frictional engaging device consisting of a friction member of carbon fiber/carbonaceous matter composite obtained by heating a precursor composed of a matrix of carbonaceous binder and additives and, dispersed in the matrix, carbon fibers, which friction member has a porosity ranging from 20 to 60%.
