摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small scale image area separation circuit in which image area separation accuracy is enhanced. SOLUTION: A black closed area detection circuit 12 performs detection of a feature of dots, i.e. a black closed area, for original image data from a line memory 11 based on a reference area and outputs detection results, as a dot area if a closed area exists otherwise as a character area. A white closed area detection circuit 13 performs detection of a feature of dots, i.e. a white closed area, for original image data from a line memory based on a reference area and outputs detection results, as a dot area if a closed area exists otherwise as a character area. Using a first determination formula for determining whether a remarked pixel is the corner of the reference area and a second determination formula for determining whether a remarked pixel is the side of the reference area, the black closed area detection circuit and the white closed area detection circuit determines connection of a dot with an adjacent pixel thus determining continuity from the central part of the reference area.
