Longitudinal cutting of moving flat glass strips from float glass plates moving at a specific feed rate with scratching of the glass surface along the desired separation line followed by breakage by bending. The glass is subjected to warming with a laser beam traversed repeatedly over the glass strip with cooling of the warmed region by a cold nozzle to produce a heat stress induced scratch.
