The present invention provides inhalable formulations comprising methacholine chloride and buffer solutions having a pH in the range of 4 to 5. Said formulations are stable, sterile, and suitable for use in bronchoprovocation testing or the methacholine challenge testing in the assessment of airway hyper­responsiveness. Also provided are methods for preparing ready-to-use methacholine chloride and buffer formulations.
