<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron type golf club head useful for a player to have excellent hitting feel by buffering the impact on the player's hand while preventing raising of the center of gravity of the head and deterioration of the durability. <P>SOLUTION: The iron type golf club head 1 has a head body 1a with a face 2 on the front face to hit a ball. The head body 1a comprises a thick peripheral edge part 11 forming the peripheral edge of the head body 1a and a thin part 12 surrounded by the peripheral edge part 11, whose thickness is smaller than the peripheral edge because of a cavity C sinking toward the face 2 side formed on the back 3 side. The peripheral edge part 11 has at least one bottomed recess 13 with the depth extending from the back 3 side to the face 2 side.
