An electrical power supply system suitable for underwater use comprises a power generation means adapted to extract heat energy from an outflow of, for example, an undersea well and use this heat energy to heat a working fluid in a higher pressure chamber. A mechanical expander positioned between the higher pressure chamber and a lower pressure chamber is arranged to be driven by the working fluid, as the fluid passes to the lower pressure chamber, where the fluid is condensed before being pumped back to the higher pressure chamber. An electrical generator connected to the expander generates an electrical signal that may be conditioned before being supplied to a point of need. The invention is particularly suitable for driving undersea valves and actuators associated with the extraction of fluids from undersea wells, and can substantially reduce the need for umbilicals between a remote control site and the point of extraction.
|
