A metal casing 3 for protecting a building element 2 from fire is arranged to surround at least a portion of the building element 2 and has external surfaces coated with a layer of intumescent material 4. The intumescent material 4 may be cast onto the casing 3 which may comprise at least two joined sections. The casing 3 may be perforated. The intumescent material 4 may be crosslinkable material, especially an epoxy material.
