The roller shutter (2) runs up and down in guide rails or grooves (3) which incorporates at least one damping and braking device (6) to correspond with the shutter. The damping device can be a rotatable element such as a gear wheel or friction wheel whilst the guide element can be a toothed rack. When the roller shutter is closed the guide element (8) of the braking device is mounted at the free end.
