<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system wherein a prescribed transmission signal gain can be obtained without using a pilot signal thereby simplifying an apparatus configuration, and to provide an optical receiver for the system. <P>SOLUTION: In the optical transmission system for transmitting an optical signal analog-modulated by a main signal 1 with a wireless frequency band used for the wireless interval communication of a mobile communication system through an optical fiber 3, an optical receiver OR 1 is provided with: an optoelectric transformation section 4; a level monitor 7; and a control circuit 8. Further, a variable attenuator 5 for controlling the gain of a wireless frequency signal reproduced by the optical receiver OR 1 is provided to a pre-stage of an output terminal 70. Then the level monitor 7 monitors a light receiving level of the optical signal transmitted through the optical fiber 3 and a control circuit 8 controls the attenuation amount of the variable attenuator 5 on the basis of the result.
