PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which has simple member constitution, can be driven with a low voltage, and has a high display contrast and superior durability at high temperature and high humidity. SOLUTION: The display element has an electrolytic layer containing silver or a compound containing silver in a chemical structure between counter electrodes, and drives and operates the counter electrodes to dissolve and deposit silver; and the electrolytic layer contains at least one kind of compound selected out of a phenol system antioxidant, a phosphoric acid system antioxidant, a sulfur system antioxidant, an amine system antioxidant, and a hydroquinone derivative.
