<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save a space for a tank by instantaneously heating water, and to reduce the weight thereof in a heat pump type water heater. <P>SOLUTION: This heat pump type water heater is provided with a compressor 1, a water heating unit 2, a pressure reducing means 3, an evaporator 4, a supply-of-hot-water detecting meas 5 for detecting supply of hot water in a water route flowing in the water heating unit 2, and an operation control means 6 for controlling operation of the compressor 1 with a signal from the supply of hot-water detecting means 5. When the supply of hot-water detecting means 5 detects that a terminal faucet 7 is released, the compressor 1 is operated, and water, which is sent from a water feeding pipe 8 by the high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant gas discharged from the compressor 1, is heated by the water heating unit 2, and hot water is supplied from the terminal faucet 7.
