PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer that is inexpensively structured and exactly detects side edges of a recording material and provides a high quality marginless image. SOLUTION: The color thermal printer 2 has a temperature distribution detection sensor 21 mounted in an position opposite to a heating element array 20 of a thermal head 17 with recording paper 10 interposed between, and detecting the heating temperature distribution of the heating element array 20 in a main scanning direction beyond the recording paper 10, and a system controller 22 specifying positions of both side edges P and P' of the recording paper 10 in the main scanning direction on the basis of the detection of the temperature distribution detection sensor 21 and recording a marginless image on the recording paper 10 by causing the heating elements in a range corresponding to the specified positions to generate heat.
