PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a characteristic surfactant and further to obtain a surfactant and a silver halide photosensitive material with which remaining of a sensitizing dye after developing treatment is sharply reduced in a field of the silver halide photosensitive material. SOLUTION: The surfactant is expressed by the formula (1); (R<SB>1</SB>-L)n-J-(A)m. In the formula (1), A denotes an acid group selected from the group consisting of a sulfonic acid, phosphoric acid and a carboxylic acid or its metal salt, R<SB>1</SB>denotes a branched aliphatic group with a≥10C, L denotes a bivalent linking group, J denotes a linking group of n+m value linking R<SB>1</SB>-L to A, (n) denotes an integer of 1 to 6 and (m) denotes an integer of 1 to 3. When (m) is≥2, a plurality of A can be different from one another or can be the same. When (n) is≥2, a plurality of R1-L can be different from one another or can be the same.
