PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light-splitting element which can be comparatively easily manufactured, which is obtained at a low cost, also, which is thin-shaped and light in weight, and capable of attaining a wide splitting area, and also, capable of splitting the polarized light which is made to be incident obliquely on the element. SOLUTION: Regarding the polarized light splitting element, having a periodically rugged structure where the period is≤1μm in x-axis direction in three-dimensional rectangular coordinates x, y and z, the projecting part and/or a part other than the projecting part in one period is constituted of two or more kinds of transparent laminating bodies having different refractive index, and the polarized light splitting element has such a structure that the ruggedness is uniform in y-axis direction; alternatively, the ruggedness is formed in the y-axis direction with a period longer than that in the x-axis direction or non-periodically.
