A color estimating method for estimating a color obtained by printing a first coloring material including a first pigment on a recording medium and by overprinting a second coloring material including a second pigment on top of the first coloring material, including the steps of: measuring a spectral density SD=b 1 =l (lambda) of the first coloring material printed on the recording medium; measuring a spectral density SD=b 2 =l (lambda) of the second coloring material printed on the recording medium; measuring a spectral density SDW=b 1 =l (lambda) of the recording medium; calculating with using the spectral density SD=b 1 =l (lambda) adjusted with a transparency of the second coloring material, a spectral density SD=b 2 =l (lambda) adjusted with a trapping state on the first coloring material, and the spectral density SDW=b 1 =l (lambda); and estimating a spectral density SDM=b 12 =l (lambda) of the color to be obtained with using a result of the calculating step.
