The invention concerns a system whereby a bill of quantities can be recorded on punched tape by the use of a keyboard and an electronic pencil or tracker in conjunction with architect's drawings. Electronic pencil or tracker. Each time the pencil 10, Fig. 2, presses on the drawing a switch 16 is operated. Alternatively, as the tracker 11 is moved along a line representing a conduit, say, a cam operates a switch at the rate of sixteen times per inch. The trailing edge of the resulting pulses picked up by a loop antenna below the table are used to operate a counter-register 21, allowance being made at 19 for the scale of the drawing. For each type of equipment the estimator uses the first three banks of a keyboard according to a code to control a microfilm projector whereby he can determine the exact code of the equipment. He then sets up the remainder of the code number, provision being made for alteration. The estimator then uses the pencil or tracker to register the quantity concerned. Depression of a record key then converts the information into teletype code and punches it on to a tape. A dial 26 may be used to preset the register or to add to the registration, e.g. in the case of vertical lengths of material. Audible warning.
