The invention relates to a macromolecular additive for lubricating oils and to the process for preparing said additive which, when admixed to mineral oils determines an increase of the viscosity thereof and of the viscosity index and a decrease of the flow temperature. According to the invention, the additive is a copolymer of higher methacrylic esters with an even number of C atoms and methyl methacrylate, comprising 70...96% higher esters with C10-C18 alkyl chain and 30...40% methyl methacrylate with an average number of 7...11 C atoms in the alkyl chain.
