A screening method for identifying compounds that are effective insect control agents includes providing cells expressing an octopamine receptor, adding the compounds to the cells, and measuring the effects of the compounds and compositions. The effects of the compounds may be determined by measuring the binding affinity of the compounds to the octopamine receptor or measuring the change in intracellular cAMP or Ca²⁺ levels.
