<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the reproduction level of a thin line when printing is performed by using a color toner instead of a black toner in a color image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 is equipped with a plurality of toner cartridges 18a to 18d, a plurality of toner remaining amount detecting means, and a toner replenishing mechanism. The plurality of toner cartridges 18a to 18c are connected to development parts 16a to 16d respectively and charged with toner of respective colors. The plurality of toner remaining amount detecting means are provided to the development parts 16a to 16d respectively and can detect toner remaining amounts. The toner replenishing mechanism is able to replenish the black toner development part 16d with color toner of the respective colors according to the remaining amount of the black toner or replenish a development part for a color toner whose remaining amount is least with a color toner of another color.
