<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for rendering contaminated matters such as sludge, waste cloth, pressure sensitive paper, and fluorescent lamp stabilizers contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) unharmful, more specifically to provide a method and an apparatus which can rapidly treat, at a time, contaminated materials, which are not uniform in properties and PCB concentrations, for example, industrial products containing a very small amount of PCB such as PCB-contaminated sludge, waste cloth, pressure sensitive paper, and fluorescent lamp stabilizers, and PCB storage vessels made of resins, steel, concrete, or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The contaminated matter contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls is decomposed in a plasma decomposition apparatus 1, and waste gas generated by the decomposition of the contaminated matter is allowed to stay and treated within a thermostatic chamber 2 kept at a temperature of 1,100 to 1,400°C for 1 to 5 s. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
