<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase contrast control board in which a smooth liquid crystal film is formed by preventing the liquid crystal film from becoming uneven since a liquid crystal material is repelled when being applied on an alignment treatment surface, and to provide a method for improving the uniformnity of an optical retardation control layer to be formed on a hydrophilic layer formed partially while using the same material for forming an alingment layer. <P>SOLUTION: A vertical alignment layer is formed of material which changes from a hydrophobic nature to a hydrophilic nature with an exposure is formed on a substrate 2. After the exposure, the liquid crystal material is applied, aligned and then solidified. Thus, the uneven application of the liquid crystal on the orientation film 3 is eliminated. Though the material is aligned horizontally in the hydrophilic area generated on the alignment layer 3 by the exposure, there is no problem substantially by making the hydrophilic area correspond to a black matrix of a display. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
