The present invention relates to the provision of a toxicity assay based on the use of male and female gametes of mammalian species not belonging to the human genus, as alternatives to using animals. The assay is based on observing morphological and/or metabolic changes during the maturation stage, the in vitro fertilization stage or the pre-implanted embryo development stage.
