PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal oxide particle having excellent ultraviolet absorbency which has excellent absorption efficiency of a long-wavelength range of ultraviolet rays or transparency, and does not damage the transparency or hue of substrates since it allows visible light to pass through and can selectively absorb only ultraviolet rays. SOLUTION: In the metal oxide particle wherein a component(s) derived from at least one kind of metal element (M') selected from the group consisting of Co, Fe and Ni is contained in a particle comprising an oxide of a metal element (M), (i) the metal element (M) is at least one kind selected from the group consisting of Zn, Ti, Ce, In, Sn, Al and Si, and at least a part of Co, Fe and Ni as the metal (M') is 2 in valence; or (ii) the metal element (M) is Zn, and has the crystal grain diameter of≤30 nm in the vertical direction to the (002) plane and has the crystal grain diameter of≥8 nm in the vertical direction to the (100) plane, or (iii) the metal element (M) also contains a component(s) derived from an alkali metal element(s) and/or an alkaline-earth element(s) similarly to the above (i).
