Compositions and methods are provided for conferring neuroprotection and preventing or inhibiting neuronal degeneration, or for promoting neurogenesis, in an individual following an injury, disease, disorder or condition selected from a stroke injury, e.g. ischemic stroke, a myocardial infarction and exposure to a neurotoxin, e.g. an organophosphate nerve gas, by administration of a therapeutically effective amount of the copolymer poly-Glu,Tyr.
