PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for refining molten metal with which inexpensive dust is injected as a material for stirring and the molten metal is efficiently refined without the molten metal invading a joint part in the spouting hole part of a lance. SOLUTION: In the method for refining the molten metal, as material for stirring with a refractory-coated lance dipped into the molten metal, at least two kinds of materials having different characteristics, that is, a first material and a second material, are used and firstly, the first material is injected for a prescribed time to form a protecting film 5 on the surrounding part of the spouting hole part 3 of the refractory-coated lance and successively, the second material is injected to refine the molten metal.
