PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method for an image forming apparatus in which a residual toner can be cleaned without requiring any special additional means even when an image carrier and a recording medium carrying belt deteriorate to change in characteristic or when temperature and humidity in the installation environment of the image forming apparatus change. SOLUTION: A density measuring means measures background density of the recording medium carrying belt or image carrier and then a patch for density measurement is carried by the recording medium carrying belt or image carrier to measure the density of the patch; while a cleaning bias is varied, the patch is cleaned and the density of the remaining toner is measured and normalized with the background data to determine an optimum cleaning bias, thereby surely cleaning the remaining toner even when the image carrier and recording medium carrying belt deteriorate to change in characteristic or when the temperature and humidity in the installation environment of the image forming apparatus change.
