PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with a fuel injection device capable of preventing seizure from occurring between a piston ring and the inner surface of a cylinder liner by avoiding the occurrence of such an event that an injection fuel directly touches the inner surface of the cylinder liner while maintaining excellent exhaust gas performance and high engine performance in all operating areas. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine comprises an injection pattern setting means in which a multi-stage injection pattern and a single-stage injection pattern as injection patterns by the fuel injection device are set in correspondence with the engine operating conditions such as the rotational speed of the engine and a load on the engine, a controller selecting a specified injection pattern from the injection pattern setting means depending on the engine operating conditions and jetting the fuel according to the selected injection pattern, and an injection pattern change-over means inputting a change-over signal for the injection pattern into the controller.
