The invention relates to compounds which can be flexibly modified without impairing the photoresponse in the structural moiety affecting the film-forming properties or the moiety affecting the surface properties and permit surface conversion with rays of relatively low-energy wavelengths and the formation of organic films on substrates with high reproducibility; and articles having organic thin films. The compounds are represented by the general formula (1): (1) wherein X is a heteroatom-containing functional group capable of interacting with a metal or metal oxide surface; R is alkyl having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkoxy having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl, alkoxycarbonyl having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or the like; n is an integer of 1 to 30; m is an integer of 0 to 5; G1 is a single bond or a divalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; Ar is an optionally substituted aromatic group; and G2 is O, S, or Nr.
