A fundus portion analyzing instrument and method for handling a large number of fundus images each singly captured as in health check-up and correctly and quickly detecting and judging a fundus defective portion such as an optic papilla pit due to suffering from glaucoma or a macular area due to a detached retina. The fundus portion analyzing instrument comprises an image capturing section for capturing the image of a fundus portion with visible or near-infrared light, a pixel data creating section for creating pixel data on the positions and brightnesses of the pixels constituting the image, a local plane inclination image creating section for creating a three-dimensional image from the positions and brightnesses of the pixels of the pixel data, defining a local approximation plane at a given pixel, and creating a local plane inclination image from the inclination angle with respect to a reference plane of the three-dimensional image, and a display section for displaying the local plane inclination image.
