PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, which takes on a monostable mode of operation by using a material exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase via a smectic A phase in a temperature lowering process as the ferroelectric liquid crystal. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element comprising two alignment substrates each having a substrate, an electrode layer and an alignment film disposed so as to make the alignment films opposite to each other and having the ferroelectric liquid crystal interposed between the alignment substrates, a reactive liquid crystal layer formed by immobilizing a reactive liquid crystal is disposed on an opposing surface of at least one out of the two alignment films.
