The motor vehicle lock has a lock cam (1) and a locking catch (2) movable between locking and release positions by an electric motor (5) and a transmission. The lock has an emergency mechanical release (11) to lift the catch away from the cam. The drive wheel (8) for the transmission remains in position adjacent the catch in normal use when the motor is not operated and engages with the catch when the emergency release is operated.
