PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a film that has a heat resistance capable of installing various functional layers at a high temperature as well as excellent optical and mechanical properties, and to provide an image display device using the film that has excellent display qualities. SOLUTION: The film comprises a polyarylate having a repeating unit represented by formula (1). In formula (1), X is a linkage having a naphthalene or biphenyl structure represented by formula (3); and A is a linkage represented by formula (2). In formula (2), R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each either one of an alkyl group and aryl group; and (j) and (k) are each an integer of 0-4. When (j) or (k) is not less than 2, R<SP>1</SP>s and/or R<SP>2</SP>s may be the same or different from each other. However, when (j) or (k) is not less than 2, and R<SP>1</SP>and/or R<SP>2</SP>on either one of positions that are ortho to the oxygen atom represented by O on the aromatic ring is a phenyl group, the other ortho position is occupied with a hydrogen atom.
