PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner and a control method capable of transmitting a transmission signal at a high speed and reducing the power consumption in a standby state of an indoor machine and an outdoor machine. SOLUTION: This air conditioner 1 comprises the indoor machine 10, the outdoor machine 20, and a signal line S for transmitting and receiving the transmission signal between the indoor machine 10 and the outdoor machine 20. The outdoor machine 20 has a mains supply part 26. The mains supply part 26 receives the power supply from the external, and supplies the mains power through a high pressure-side first power supply line ACL1 and a standard-side first power supply line ACN1. The indoor machine 10 or the outdoor machine 20 has a transmission power supply part 24 and a switching contact MR30. The transmission power supply part 24 creates the transmission power and supplies the transmission power through the signal line S. The transmission power is DC power for transmitting and receiving the transmission signal with the indoor machine 10 through the signal line S.
